The panel "What is the position of Eskişehir
in Local and Global Competition?" was
prepared with the collaboration of URAK and
Eskişehir Chamber of Commerce
and was held on the 30th of
April, 2009 in Eskişehir.
The panel,
which was based on the pioneer study of
URAK- Intercity Competitiveness Index
2007-2008, was held to discuss the
competitive advantage of Eskişehir and the
prospective road map of the city.
Thanks to the sponsorship of Setur, a
documentary film depicting
the
Sultanahmet Tourism Cluster Development
Project held by URAK in 1999-2005 was
shot by Gökhan Yorgancıgil who is also
a member of URAK. The first showing of the
film was performed on İZ TV in February,
2009.
General Coordinator of URAK, Associate
Professor Melih Bulu attended "North Cyprus
Competitiveness Forum" which was organized
by The Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce
with the support of Investment and
Development Agency and the State Planning
Organization. The meeting was opened
by Mehmet Ali Talat, the President of
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on the
30th of January 2009, and hosted Howard
Rosen, the former Chairman of the American
Competitiveness Council and one of the
advisers of the Obama Transition Period .
The Competitiveness Report of Turkish
Republic of Northern Cyprus, which was
prepared based on the World Competitiveness
Report was assessed in the meeting.
URAK and Malatya Inonu University with the
cooperation of Malatya Chamber of Commerce
and Industry organized a panel,
"Competitiveness and Clustering"", on the
25th of December 2008. In the panel,held in
Malatya Inonu University, URAK Projects
Coordinator Dr. Hakkı Eraslan carried out a
presentation on Clustering-based sectoral
and regional development strategies while
the team leader of URAK Intercity
Competitiveness Index, Professor Dr. Kerem
Alkin made a presentation on "Global
Crisis,transformation of international
economic stabilization and its effects on
the global competition.

URAK City Competitiveness Index 2007-2008
was made public in December, 2008 for the
first time and drew attention of public and
private sector, academicians and NGOs on a
large scale. The project
is constructed on a model which uses
publicly available data and that allows to
measure the degree of competitiveness of a
city in Turkey in comparison to other cities
in Turkey.
The project is unique in Turkey in terms of
its feature that allows URAK to update
annually in the following years. For

The book "Tourism
Industry for Gaining Competitive Advantage:
Sectoral Strategies and Applications
prepared in the leadersip of URAK was made
public with the participation of Chairman of
URAK, Ali Koç and Turkey's Minister of
Culture and Tourism.
The book was published with the aim of
identifying strategies that serve for the
development of Turkish Tourism industry, and
increasing the competitive advantage of the
industry in both national and global
context. The book was designed in the
"Cluster Approach" framework which is a
major approach for sustainable
competitiveness and also covers desrcriptive
information on Tourism industry. For further

The team led by Assistant Professor Metin
Türkay from URAK Team and Dr. Halil Kavaklı
from the University of Koç has conducted
studies in the
Center for
Computational Biology and Bioinformatics
in the University of Koç
on the protein-protein
interactions
which cause cancer formation. Tests
started for one of the prostat drugs
developed by the group and yielded
successful results.

"Strategic Cooperations of SMEs for Global
Competition: Cluster Models" held by the
collaboration of İstanbul Kültür University
and the Competitiveness Institute (TCI) on
the 27th of March.

The press conference
of the book "Organic Agriculture for Gaining
Competitive Advantage: Sectoral Strategies
and Applications" which was prepared by the
Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and
Rural Affais and URAK
as partners, was held in Divan Hotel in Taksim on the 15th of February with the
participation of the Minister of Agriculture
and Rural Affairs and the Board Chairman of
URAK, Ali Y. Koç.

held in the Holding Building of Koç.
URAK was approved to be a candidate in the
short-list of the EU supported tender named
"Development of a Clustering Policy".
The corporate identity work of URAK was held
completely voluntarily by the team led by
Mr. Kenan Dimetoka from
DCW (Dimetoka Creative Workshop)
Agency.
Studies of Dr. Metin TÜRKAY from Academic
Research Group was cited as prizeworthy by
TÜBİTAK.
Ordinary
general meeting
of URAK was held on the 27th of September in
2005, and Board of Directors and
Supervisory Board members were elected.
Annual Innovation Policies: Country and
Country Group Reports which were developed
as a tool for the benchmarking regarding
innovation policy of European Commission
were published in
"European TrendChart on
Innovation".
